Matthew Akl - Associate Lawyer

Mathew Akl is a Canadian Barrister & Solicitor and a member of the Law Society of Ontario. He is an Associate Lawyer at AKM Law.

Mathew studied law at the University of Ottawa and obtained his Juris Doctor in June 2022. While completing his law degree, Mathew also studied political science as part of the dual Political Science and Common Law Program at the University of Ottawa. Mathew always sought to gain practical experience alongside his studies and completed placements at the Senate of Canada, the Samuelson-Glushko Canadian Internet Policy and Public Interest Clinic, and the Programme de pratique de droit (Law Practice Program).

Mathew developed an interest in immigration law after taking a course on the subject. This led him to write his major paper on the topic of federal court jurisprudence of humanitarian and compassionate decisions. In the summer of 2021, Mathew summered a boutique immigration firm in Montreal. Mathew also worked at Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada as a student during his final semester of studies.

After graduating law school, Mathew completed his articles of clerkship at Matkowsky Immigration Law in Toronto. Mathew joined AKM law in October 2022. His areas of practice include: humanitarian and compassionate applications, refugee claims, spousal sponsorships, and temporary residence applications. Mathew is passionate about his work and prides himself on obtaining positive results for his clients.

In his free time, Mathew enjoys reading, playing tennis, skiing, and trying out new cafes across the city.
